The Command Position

Sit where you can see the door, with something solid behind you. That is the command position. It is a seating habit, not a guarantee of focus or rank.

See the door, feel the wall

The command position is the most portable idea in household Feng Shui. You sit, or sleep, so that you can see the door without being directly in line with it, and so that there is a solid wall behind you rather than a window, a corridor or open air. The traditional reason is awareness and support: you are not startled by entries, and you are not perched on an edge. The practical reason is the same sentence without the theory. People who can see the door fidget less. People with a window at their back often feel vaguely unfinished, then blame their character. Use it first at the desk where you actually work, and at the bed if the room allows. A dining chair you use for twenty minutes is a smaller matter than the seat you use for five hours. The entryway is the other end of the same path. A clear door and a seat that can see it belong together.

When the room will not cooperate

Most rented rooms were not designed for this. The only outlet is on the wrong wall. The door is behind the only place a desk fits. The โ€œsolid wallโ€ is a wardrobe door that bangs. Forcing the ideal is how Feng Shui becomes a quarrel with the floor plan. Approximate. A desk angled so the door is in peripheral vision is better than a desk facing a corner while the door is at your back. A bookcase or a high-backed chair can stand in for a missing wall. A bed that cannot see the door can at least avoid lining the pillow up with it, so you are not sleeping in the draft of every entrance. These are compromises. Name them as compromises. Do not invent a story in which the landlordโ€™s layout has decided your year. If several seats are possible and you want the directional layer โ€” Eight Mansions directions from your own birth data, not a universal lucky corner โ€” that is what the Feng Shui reading is for. The command position is the form. The personal direction is a second filter, used when you have a choice.

What not to put in the line of the door

Classical notes dislike sitting or sleeping in a straight line with the door, even when you can see it. The complaint is rush and exposure, not a specific disaster. If the desk is stuck in that line, shift it a few degrees or place a solid object so you are not the first thing the opening hits. A plant can soften a line. It cannot replace a wall behind you. Glass at your back counts as open, not as support, even when the view is pleasant. A beautiful window behind the monitor is a lighting problem and a support problem at once: glare on the screen, and no sense of a back. Turn if you can. If you cannot, a blind at working height gives you light from the side and a visual back. This is ordinary ergonomics. Feng Shui noticed it early and wrapped it in cosmology. You are allowed to keep the ergonomics if you do not want the cosmology.

A seat is not a promotion

The command position will not make a meeting go your way, and it will not give you authority you have not earned. It can make a workday less jumpy. That is enough to justify moving a desk. It is not enough to justify a claim about income, health or status. If you want the birth-based half of Feng Shui โ€” your favorable directions, and how a facing element meets your Day Master โ€” start from the free chart and the Feng Shui page. Move the chair either way. The chart does not need the chair, and the chair does not need a prophecy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the command position apply to the bed?

The same idea is used for the bed: see the door, avoid the straight line of the door, keep a headboard or wall behind the pillow. Shared rooms and small bedrooms often cannot do all three. Do the ones that fit.

What if I work facing a wall in an office I do not control?

Then you do not control it. A small mirror or a change of seat is sometimes possible and sometimes not. Feng Shui is not a reason to violate a workplace layout you cannot change.

Is this the same as a lucky direction?

No. The command position is about door and backing. Lucky or favorable directions, in the method this site uses, come from personal Eight Mansions calculation. A seat can satisfy one and not the other.
