Every ten years, a new luck cycle opens. It is a chapter of symbols, built from the month pillar โ not a decade that has been judged good or bad in advance.
Ten years, one pillar
English readers meet this as a luck pillar. On this site the name is the ten-year luck cycle, Da Yun (ๅคง่ฟ). After the natal four pillars, the chart grows a sequence of further pillars, each describing a block of about ten years. The sequence is derived from the month pillar. Its direction โ forward or backward through the calendar โ depends on the gender used in the classical rule and on whether the year stem is yang or yin. Cycles do not flip on your Western birthday, and they do not all start at age ten. If a reading gives you a decade without the month and year it opens, it has skipped the solar-term arithmetic. Luck is the wrong English word
โLuck pillarโ is the phrase people search, and the graphic for this note uses it. The word luck smuggles in a score. Da Yun is closer to a climate than to a prize. You still choose, work, get ill, move house and change your mind inside the climate. The cycle does not schedule those events. Annual pillars, which change at the Beginning of Spring, are a finer grain inside the decade. They are also symbols. Stacking a year animal on a luck pillar and calling the sum a prediction is a genre this site does not practice. Two people in the same calendar year are not in the same cycle. The cycles are personal, tied to the month of birth and to the direction rule.
